Friday - June 22, 2012

Continuing from Thursday night into Friday morning - Matt Maggart and I were asked to help some students from Miami Ad School who were in the Young Lions competition to participate in their spot. Of course Matt and I were so excited to help and watch them because we hoped we could be doing the same thing one day. They let us read their creative brief and somewhat help with suggestions. It was about no shave November, renamed 'Movember.'(Mustache/November). Thursday night Matt gladly shaved his beard so he would have a mustache to be an actor in their spot. The festival gave everybody the same type of camera phone made by Nokia to shoot their spot and they could only edit it using the computer given to them with the allotted amount of time. They couldn't tell us exactly what they were doing because after all - it is a serious competition. We went from place to place to trying to find a place with good lighting and show a few scenes with the time we could. They agreed to do it in the morning would be better. When Matt and I met up with them in the morning they had a completely new idea! Which we thought was really cool because they went through so many different ideas and executions and ended up coming up with something different the morning of. Even though Matt was not in the final production it was still interesting to see how they brainstormed together, filmed it, talked about changing it, etc. I am so happy they let us tag along and be apart of it because I learned so much.

The seminar the Grey: Legends of Music: Debbie Harry of Blondie was definitely interesting. I can honestly say I did not learn that much but it was entertaining to say the least. I met a wonderful woman next to me in the seminar and together we looked up how old Blondie was and found out she was 66! I couldn't believe it because damn she looks good! They asked how she came up with her name and she just said it was the most obvious and simple thing so she stuck with it. Tim Mellors and her kept getting off track with the conversation but he talked about how she is a musical legend but also made an icon out of herself. She said the first song she ever wrote was a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. Tim Mellors also kept talking about how great of a presence and video Debbie Harry had. They spoke a bit about how they are currently making a film about her life; which let to them talking about how she started from the bottom and worked her way to the top. The most important thing I took our of their conversation was that as long as you work really hard you can make a name for yourself. Also, at the very end she stood up and sang a few songs; which I thought was really cool of her!
